Mrs. Scerri is one of the many important teachers here at Hayesville High School. She has been teaching for ten years and currently teaches Spanish, but has also taught multiple other subjects. As well as teaching High School, Mrs. Scerri leads the Global Studies club for the middle and high school, which is an academic club held throughout the year.
When asked what she did before becoming a teacher, Mrs. Scerri shares some about her past, “I was a full time archeologist for 6 years, and specialized in ancient studies.” But after pursuing her career for half a decade, Mrs. Scerri discovered her other passion: teaching. She started her teaching career as a teaching assistant here in North Carolina, and then proceeded to continue her education to get her full teaching license. Since then, Mrs. Scerri has taught Ancient World History, North Carolina History, Special Education, and Spanish.
There are numerous different methods and philosophies when it comes to teaching. Mrs. Scerri says that her teaching style is “less reliant on preset curriculums and more focused on developing [her] own method of teaching” and prioritizes working collaboratively. She also thinks that it is important to teach her students “soft skills” and other abilities that will help prepare them for the future.
Mrs. Scerri is the supervisor of the Global Studies GEAR UP program and club, which is year round and is available to Hayesville High school and Middle school students. This program is loosely structured as a class, but is more focused on learning through activities that are related to whichever topic the group is focused on. The Global studies program also hosts independent activities and trips that students can go on once they have completed their 8th grade year. These trips are usually held once a year, and according to Mrs. Scerri, “This year we will be going to Italy and Greece.”
Throughout her teaching career Mr. Scerri has been on many adventures and remarks that they have influenced and impacted the way she views the world and teaches today. One of Mrs. Scerri’s current Spanish students, junior Maya Polk, gives an example of why she thinks Mrs. Scerri is a special and great teacher: “Mrs. Scerri is always very understanding about whatever situation you are in, and genuinely cares for her students.”
