JAM. A place where people get together to play music and learn instruments, all for free. You can be as young as 12 or as old as 18. The JAM director is T-Claw Clawford, a dance caller, musician, and community organizer. Sessions occur at the John C. Campbell Folk School in the Festival Barn on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4-6 pm. On Tuesdays, the JAM students participate in dances and concerts for the dining hall while on Wednesdays, the students learn chords and how to play their instruments. They then group back together and play bluegrass songs.
Two students from Hayesville High School have been in JAM for quite a while: Hailey Mulkey and Alba Jones, both freshmen. While Hailey plays the fiddle and other instruments, Alba plays the banjo. Both students participated in this year’s Fall Festival on Saturday, October 5th and performed bluegrass songs along with the other members of the band. To catch their next performance, be sure to ask them next time you see them in the halls!
