Student Council plays a vital role in shaping student life at Hayesville High School. Camila Solorio Vargas, this year’s student body president, understands the responsibility that comes with the role. She ran for office with the goal of being a voice for her peers. “I know there are students who feel unable to voice their thoughts and opinions,” she shared. “As student body president, I can take these thoughts and opinions into consideration and find a course of action for them.” Her leadership is about more than just making decisions—it’s about listening, advocating, and ensuring every student feels heard.
One of the challenges of the job is navigating the steps required to implement new ideas. “A lot of students may not realize that ideas have to go through the right people,” Camila explained. “Most of the time, I suggest these ideas to Mr. Overlin. Before going through with them, we discuss the purpose and meaning behind them. It’s like a chain or ladder, starting at the bottom and working up to get something pushed through.” This process highlights the collaborative nature of Student Council, where persistence and communication are key. Beyond leadership, the Student Council provides insight into how decisions are made within the school. The work done by student representatives helps shape policies, events, and initiatives that impact daily life at Hayesville High. Whether it’s addressing student concerns or planning memorable activities, the council plays an essential role in maintaining a dynamic and engaged school community.
