We interviewed Mrs. Pullum, the new Gear-Up teacher, and asked her some questions. In this interview, Mrs. Pullum shares her preference for teaching high school over middle school, highlighting the maturity, positive attitudes, and relaxed culture she observes among high school students. While she appreciates many aspects of middle school, she feels high school offers a more beneficial environment for learning and growth.
Her favorite part of teaching, especially through the Gear-Up program, is helping students discover their unique talents and guiding them toward paths that bring them joy and fulfillment. She teaches the college and career curriculum, which equips students with essential skills for success beyond high school. Although the differences between teaching middle and high school are minimal, she notes that high school classes are longer and fewer in number, which changes how she structures her teaching.
For the current school year, her goals focus on connecting with as many students as possible and providing opportunities for college exploration. She aspires to provide her students with an education that is a lifelong asset, one that no one can take away. Her biggest challenge has been balancing a fun and serious atmosphere, especially with middle school students. Ultimately, her teaching philosophy encourages students to seize every opportunity to learn as much as they can.
