When Katelynn Smith first heard her name being said on the announcements for homecoming court, her first reaction was pure excitement. “Honestly, I was so excited! At that moment, I didn’t even know what to think, because I never imagined I’d be chosen to represent my class. It was such a surprise, and I’m truly grateful for the opportunity.” she said. For Katelynn, being on homecoming court is more than wearing the big dress and taking pictures, she sees it as an honor to be seen as a positive role model by classmates she has known since elementary school.
She believes that homecoming brings the school together. From dressing up for spirit week to cheering at the football game, it builds excitement and creates a sense of community among students, teachers, and families. Her favorite homecoming week tradition is spirit week, which she describes as “a whole week of Halloween, but with school spirit mixed in.” Katelynn is most excited to dress up, take pictures, and share her experience with her family and friends.
When we asked her what message we would give to younger students who might want to be on the court someday, her response was, “I’d encourage younger students to always be kind—you never know what someone else might be going through. And most importantly, lean on God through the good times and the hard times. I’ve been in tough places before, and I’ve learned that no one and nothing can truly pull you out of that hole except the Lord.”
Katelynn says her family has been her biggest support throughout this exciting process. Her mom and stepmom helped her choose her dress, shoes, jewelry, hairstyle, what her dad should wear, and guided her through preparing for the homecoming information piece. Friends and extended family have been encouraging as well, some even planning to attend the game just to watch Katelynn walk the field. “I feel so thankful and blessed to have people care about me that much.” Katelynn says.
