On October 3rd Hayesville had its annual homecoming football game against Cherokee. Near the end of the game Hayesville scored and it was time for kickoff. Before the kickoff penalties were given to Cherokee for unsportsmanlike conduct. This led to the kickoff being put on the 2 yard line to end the game. This happens very rarely. The most amount usually seen is around 15 yards forward from where the kickoff is originally held.
When interviewed, Sophomore Josue Salas says that, “Cherokee had received too many flags which caused the kickoff to end up being on the 2 yard line.” and when asked about how he felt kicking close to the endzone he said, “Honestly I was kind of nervous, it’s a short distance but there’s still pressure, everyone is watching and there’s no room for error.”
This being that a kickoff from the 2 yard line is almost never seen led to the Jackets landing themselves on the CBS Sports social media page. It’s on their Tik Tok, Instagram and more. This is an extraordinary surprise to say the least. It’s an awesome feeling to look at a very popular media page with over 6 million followers combined on Tik Tok and Instagram and see your high school’s football team.
As of the moment of writing this article the video has 4.4M views on CBS Sports. This number is just going to keep growing. This will be a special thing to look back on and say “I remember that.”
