As the crisp air leaves us and the trees start to bud we can always be certain that spring will bring us the sweet scent of flowers. The springtime flowers bring a sense of peace to the community, as we see the blossoms coming out into what will eventually be a beautiful burst of color into the world. As we look into what our community finds as the best flowers, we see the varieties of shapes, colors, and scents.
Bradford Pear
Senior Maverick Imlay says that springtime is always his favorite season because of the various colors that pop up during this time of year. He took a photo of a Bradford Pear in mid-bloom. Maverick says, “I chose this picture by accident to be honest, it was going to be a practice picture.” Maverick is in Journalism where students have to take a photo of the week picture and this was one of his test photos for the spring category.
Iris
The Iris is a symbol of courage, valor, and peace. An iris is a flower known for being used as a medicine. “The following treatments are used with irises; inflammation, cancer, bacterial and viral infections, and other diseases,” stated from American Meadows. The iris has been a popular flower since Greek Mythological times. The flower has been a symbol of monarchs and royal families throughout history.
Dogwood
Dogwood trees are native to our area, the bloom being the North Carolina state flower. Mrs. Carla Beck appreciates the Dogwood tree in her yard, “I always looked forward to when our Dogwood tree bloomed because it is my favorite symbol of spring.” According to Plant Me Green, the legend states, “The Dogwood tree provided the wood used to build the cross that Jesus was crucified upon.” Though never stated for sure, many people believe that this is what came to be.
Azalea
The Azalea is popular with people, as it is one of the most common flowers found in spring. The Azalea is known as the flower that brings happiness and positive energy to the people who surround it. Having the flower near your home is supposed to serve as a reminder that there is always happiness in the world. This photo was taken at the Hayesville Elementary school garden. There were so many blossoms there it drew my attention.
Lily
The lily is a flower known for special occasions. Being given a bundle of these beautiful flowers is an experience in itself. It is known to have a meaning of purity. The white and purple colors draw people in, giving them a feeling of contentment. In Greek mythology the lily is a symbol of Hera the goddess of marriage and women. The lily has been a flower that has stayed with women for centuries. Kyleigh states, “This flower always reminds me of my grandparents because they always have them in their yard. The pretty blooms are coming out in the spring, showing the change in weather.” Kyleigh snapped this photo while spending time with her family.
White Cherry Tree
The White Cherry Tree is only in bloom for a week. During this time, many people try to plan events so they can have these gorgeous blooms in their photos. Having the bloom in events and pictures is a part of why the tree is so popular. The Cherry Tree is also known to symbolize the start of spring, when the blooms appear you know the weather is changing. This Cherry Tree photo was one that I took while walking around the campus at Hayesville. Most of the trees around the area had turned green, but did not have any blooms at the time that this one did.
