Buzz the Mascot
This 2025-2026 school year, we have a new and improved mascot at Hayesville High School. The staff and students took a vote on the name of the mascot, and “Buzz” was chosen .
We talked to Coach McClure to give us some insight on his opinion on buzz and here are some of his responses:
- “What are your thoughts on Buzz?” : “ I think it will be very good for the kids to have a mascot.”
- “Who do you think it is?” : “ I know who it is already, so the students will just have to try and figure out who they think it is.”
- “Why do you think it’s important for schools to have a mascot?” : “I think it’s important because it gives schools their own identity.”
- “What do you think about the students being able to choose the name?” : “I think that it was good because it gives the students voice and ownership”
- “Do you think that having a mascot has changed anything?” : “It increases school spirit and pride.”
Buzz is our first official Yellow Jacket mascot, but the old mascot for our school was the Blue Devil. When our school began, it was called Hicksville Academy and was founded by John Hicks. It was then sold to a church that changed the name to Hayesville Academy, who then sold it to Trinity College in Durham, now known as Duke University. Hayesville High School was founded in 1910, and still thrives today!
