When Grace Gibson heard her name announced for homecoming queen, she was genuinely surprised. “I didn’t think I would be runner-up, much less Homecoming Queen. It was very exciting.” she said. For Grace, having this title isn’t just a reflection about the crown or about getting chosen, it’s a reflection of the kindness and respect that she has shown to her classmates and says, “being chosen as Homecoming Queen means to me that I’ve been a good person to my classmates. I’ve shown good character to other people and even though being Homecoming Queen isn’t why I try to be a good person, it has helped me grow good relationships with other people.”
Homecoming week brought so much excitement to Grace. She mostly enjoyed the spirit days at school and loved wearing her homecoming court t-shirt on Thursday. Friday was a day of constantly prepping for her, she got to be out of school, spend time with the people she loves, and have her hair done at Bloom salon in town. After that was when she got her dress on and had a truly amazing experience with the other girls on the court. “It was so fun to be able to hang out with the other girls on homecoming court and take pictures with them. Walking on the field is an experience I will never forget and the anticipation of who was going to win was so exciting. Winning and then getting to see so many wonderful people after halftime was an amazing end to the night.” After being crowned, she stood by the gate with the rest of the girls and enjoyed greeting everyone and taking pictures.
Leading up to the big night, she had both fun and unforgettable memories. The night her dress came from Amazon she tried it on at home while taking care of her simulation baby for Mrs. Clont’s child development class. She remembers laughing and figuring everything out with her sister, Ann, as they prepared for the unforgettable night! On the day of Homecoming, she ate breakfast with her family and got ready at her aunt’s house, which made it even more special for her. Looking back on the day, Grace said preparing for homecoming was “the most fun stress” that she has ever experienced. “Looking back, it’s all a blur, but it was such an amazing day, and I wouldn’t change a thing.” We asked what advice she would give for someone wanting to be Homecoming Queen
some day. Grace says, “If you want to be the homecoming queen, have good character, be a good person and treat everyone with respect. Don’t gossip or be part of drama. Being involved in lots of school groups is also an awesome way to make relationships with people. Getting to know people is a huge part of it. Don’t be someone who stresses other people out, be someone reliable and helpful. Follow Jesus in everything you do.”
