Club Spotlight: Drama Club

This year HHS students are participating in Drama Club. They initially wanted to start the club in 2020 but of course, the pandemic stopped that from happening. The club is funded by the Clay County Historical and Arts Council. Professional actress Carrie Hood is the instructor of the Drama Club, and Jill White is the faculty sponsor. The club meets every Wednesday after school for about two hours each week.

In Drama Club, you learn about all sorts of things that would help you in the theater. Students practice improv, character building, blocking, and many more techniques used in theater. Sophomore Phoneix Bentley says, “My favorite thing to do in Drama Club is improv. It’s a game where you have situations and you have to keep going until the story ends.” The club also does a lot of scene work and they work on their strengths and weaknesses in their acting. The club has plans to prepare for an acting showcase in the near future.

Other than the skills, and techniques you learn while in Drama Club, you also have a chance to make new friends.  Being comfortable with your group is important when you participate in a club. Freshman Maya Polk says, “I enjoy Drama Club because of the friends you make while in there. You also get to see a lot of people from different clicks coming together over one similar interest, which is very interesting.” For any club seeing students come from different groups and getting together over something they all share a love for is amazing, and can really build friendships and create a circle of peers you are comfortable with.  I encourage all HHS students to seek out a club our school offers that interest them. This can help students step out of their comfort zones, and have fun!
