Since time immemorial, humanity has been striving to improve and get better. That is what makes us human. Perhaps the best example of this comes from sports, which can push our bodies to the limit when it comes to willpower, strength, and for the purposes of what this individual excels at, speed and stamina. No matter where we are, humanity strives to improve, even in our relatively small town of Hayesville. Such is the case for Parker Hughes.
Parker runs track and cross country here at Clay County schools and has done so for years, stating that he has always been skilled at running. “I’ve been running since the sixth grade,” Parker says. “I’ve always been pretty good at it.” Parker participated in cross country and track throughout all of middle school, though he shows a preference for cross country. “It isn’t the same thing over and over. With cross country, it’s a different place every time.”
Though Parker himself seems quite humble, his close friend, junior Tate Roberts, speaks very highly of him. “I’ve known Parker for almost as long as I can remember,” says Tate. “One of his best qualities is his kindness towards others. He is always positive, and lightens the mood.” Tate Roberts also calls attention to how humble Parker tends to be. “He carries himself not with boastfulness but with confidence, and he is insanely motivated and driven in whatever he wishes.”
Despite Tate’s belief that Parker could easily pursue a career in running if he so chooses, Parker doesn’t seem to have an interest in that. “I wouldn’t really consider this for a career,” Parker says that running is something he does to get outside, much like his other interests. “I ride dirt bikes and go fishing when I have spare time.” Parker enjoys going trout fishing with his brother, Chance, who is also a close friend of Tate Roberts, being the one who introduced Tate to Parker.
Although Parker Hughes doesn’t seem interested in running quite as much in his future, it is clear that he takes it very seriously, especially given how Tate describes him. “He is one of the hardest-working individuals in Hayesville High.”
