According to aps.org, video games have been around since 1958, when the first game was ever created. Since then, thousands of consoles have been created, along with popular franchises such as Resident Evil, Minecraft, Sonic, Mario, etc. As more games were made, many myths were shared across the internet. I agree with some, but not all. I’ve chosen four different popular myths according to JuegoStudio.com, and in this article, I will be evaluating each one.
Myth #1: Video Games Lead to Social Isolation. In some ways, I believe this is true. As a gamer myself, I usually isolate myself from society to play video games as a way to cope with reality. Junior Logan Cummins says otherwise though. He stated, “I disagree with that because I believe that it brings people together with common interests.”.
Myth #2: Video Games are Addictive. I, for one, agree with this. Video games have this magnetic pull towards people that get them addicted. According to the Mayo Clinic Health System, “6 to 15 percent of all gamers exhibit signs that could be characterized as symptoms.”.
Myth #3: Girls do not Play Video Games. I HEAVILY disagree with this. I’ve met many females who play video games and even knew some who played in ESports. Most of the females I met playing Overwatch were super chill. Forbes says “Since March 2023, 49 percent of video gamers in the United States were females..”.
Myth #4: Video Games are Only for Entertainment. The University of Rochester says “Regardless of all the possible negative effects, video games can have a positive impact on people and also have more value than just simple entertainment. Videogames have been used for educational, medical, and stress relief purposes.” I agree with this statement, and I’m sure some older people do too. Have you ever had to put the dishes in the dishwasher and your parents go “Well if you played Tetris, this would be an easy chore.”? Yeah, well my mom did, so thanks Tetris for helping me correctly put dishwashers up.
