It’s wintertime in Hayesville and you know what that means, the winter sports season is upon us. In this article, I will be spotlighting a fan favorite sport, basketball. Basketball is a favorite sport in Hayesville and even the entire country. The basketball season has already started for the Varsity Men’s and Women’s teams and the JV boys’ and girls’ teams.
Their records after the first few games are, that the Men’s Varsity team is 3-0, the Women’s Varsity is 2-1, and the JV boy’s team is 1-0. The JV girls’ coach, Meghan McQuade, says she is very excited for the upcoming season. She also says “We work well as a team and are very aggressive.” Last year the JV girls’ team consisted of girls who had never played before and they are hoping to have a better record than last year.
Both JV and Varsity girls consist of mostly young players, with the JV having four sophomores and 7 freshmen and the Varsity having 3 upperclassmen who are juniors. Junior player, Breanna Abrams shares that the juniors on the team are expected to be leaders and set examples for younger players. While the girls’ teams consist mostly of younger players, both boys’ teams have mostly older players. The Varsity boys consist of 6 seniors, 4 juniors, and 4 sophomores. The JV boys have 5 sophomores and 4 freshmen. Sophomore EJ Abrams shares that he is excited to have the opportunity to play on the varsity team as an underclassman. He also said that he believes the JV team has improved from last year.
Both coaches and players are confident in their team’s abilities and expect the season to go well. Fans are also excited to watch how the teams have improved since last season.
