This season the wrestling team has been improving with every practice and every dual tournament. This year at HHS the girls and boys are not co-ed anymore, meaning girls wrestle girls and boys wrestle boys. The HHS 2023-2024 boys’ team has a full roster: Jameson Dawson, Will Denton, Landon Gibson, Patrick Denton, Hayden Hunt, Silas Lovingood, Robert Manning, Daniel Athan, Andrew Reynolds, Caden Gordon, Kota Patterson, Raul Rivera-Prieto, Austin Cox, Wyatt James, and Rayland Martinez. The HHS girls’ team includes Katie Miller, Star Shelton, Lilli Denton, and Amyna Denton.
I interviewed two wrestlers about how the season’s going and their personal experiences—senior Star Shelton shares her feelings on her experience so far, “I feel this wrestling season has been a great season as a senior. My greatest memory is having the best teammates to celebrate each win and loss with them.” Star also expresses, “She didn’t know what she would’ve done this year without the teammates she has now. The greatest challenge I’ve had is finishing the match when I’m tired and working hard before and after practice to help get a little better.”
Junior Andrew Reynolds comments, “I feel this year’s season has been good. The team has grown and improved so much. My greatest memory of this season was placing first at the King of the Hill tournament in Towns County, my greatest challenge this year was coming back after injuring my patella and tearing my MCL.”
As a member of the wrestling team, I have been really happy with how our team has grown. This year we’ve grown on our girls’ team, which has been a big growth. On February 3rd women’s regionals is at 8 am in North Henderson, Men’s regionals is in Robbinsville on February 9th and 10th, and men’s and women’s state is on February 15th,16th, and 17th in Greensboro Coliseum. Come on out Jacket fans and support your Jackets on their big experience on their way to regionals and state.
